Family Outdoor Programs
Family outdoor programs create meaningful opportunities for families to explore, play, and connect in nature together. From rafting and kayaking trips to family camping and overnight wilderness camps, these experiences are designed to be fun, safe, and accessible for all ages. Build lasting memories, try new adventures, and enjoy quality time outdoors as a family.
An intro to paddling basics, water safety, and river awareness through hands-on instruction and practice. Participants build confidence, master essential strokes, and gain skills for safe kayaking adventures. Instructed by Trigg Skoe. Spend 3 days in the MRD pool learning the basics, and then 2 days on the Uncompahgre River putting those skills to the test!
Pool Days: Saturdays, June 13-27 - 9:00-10:30am
River Days: Saturdays, July 11-18 - 10:00-2:00pm

Our Family Camping Program is for families who want to explore the outdoors but aren’t sure where to start. Hosted by Colorado Canyons Association and MRD—come learn camping basics and create lasting family memories!

Take on the rapids of the North Fork of the Gunnison on an exhilarating guided whitewater rafting trip. Expert guides lead you through thrilling rapids and scenic canyon stretches, ensuring a safe and unforgettable adventure. Perfect for thrill-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts, this trip combines excitement, stunning views, and the rush of Colorado’s wild waters.

Enjoy a relaxing scenic float down the Gunnison River, where calm waters and beautiful canyon views create the perfect laid-back outdoor experience. Drift along with a knowledgeable guide, take in the surrounding landscape, and keep an eye out for wildlife along the shoreline. Ideal for all ages, this mellow trip is a great way to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of the area.

Learn important survival skills from experienced instructors. The course includes two Wednesday evening preparatory sessions, culminating in a two-day, one-night practical campout where skills are put into action.
Skill-Building Days: Wednesdays, July 29th and August 5th at 5:30-7:00pm
Overnight Days: Saturday, August 8th at 8:30am through Sunday, August 9th at 5:00pm
